Chapter 13

An hour after learning of Michael’s death, Cheryl and Isaac arrived at the police station. They took Cheryl off to get a DNA sample which Isaac was totally against. He felt that she needed to have her lawyer present before submitting to any type of tests or answering any questions but she said that she had nothing to hide. Once she returned from giving a sample, they were escorted into Detective Miller’s office. He stood up and shook hands with Cheryl.

“Nice to meet you Mrs. Cartwright.”

Cheryl smiled politely and took her seat.

“We just have a few questions for you.”

“Okay.”

I understand that you and Mr. Cartwright were in the process of getting divorced. Was this a messy divorce?” he asked.

“Well I don’t know what you mean by “messy,” but I am the one who filed for the divorce. He didn’t want it and he tried to fight it but he had been unfaithful and I just wanted to end it.”

“Hmm, interesting choice of words,” the detective commented. “So he had cheated on you, which probably made you very angry and upset?”

Isaac could see where this was going and he didn’t like it one little bit. He glanced over at Cheryl. She was as cool as a cucumber. She was not rattled by the detective in the least.

“I was hurt when I found out yes, but I moved on,” Cheryl responded flashing her engagement ring at the detective. She smiled at Isaac.

“I see...congratulations. I assume you are the lucky man?” he asked Isaac.

Isaac nodded.

“Okay Mrs. Cartwright, then maybe you can help me out then. We don’t have much to go on. You seem to be our only suspect.”

“How so?” she asked calmly.

“Scorned wife,” the detective replied nonchalantly. Would you mind telling me where you were last night between the hours of say…11:30pm to Midnight?”

“I was at home sleeping,” she replied.

“Were you at home with her?” The detective asked Isaac.

“No, I was out for the evening. But when I returned home, she was in bed asleep.”

“What time was this?”

“I don’t remember. I think it was a little after midnight. I was a little tipsy. I had been out celebrating at a club with my friends.”

“What club was this?”

“It’s called “Addictive”.

The detective jotted down notes on his pad. He turned his attention back to Cheryl. “You and your husband both had very well paying careers, your husband in particular. It seems that he wanted to make sure that you were well taken care of in the event of his death to the tune of...What is it? 2 million?” he asked feigning ignorance.

“We both had policies on each other for 2 million dollars,” Cheryl clarified.

“Looks like you’re going to be a very wealthy woman,” he replied cynically.

“There are lots of great charities in the Houston area. I could always make a donation to the policeman’s ball,” she said sarcastically.

He ignored her derisive tone and continued his assessment.

“That’s a lovely home that you lived in up on the hillside,” he said.

“Thanks,” Cheryl replied.

“Elaborate security system too.
